Match Reports 09/10 > August 09

DOLGELLAU 1 BLAENAU AMATEURS 8.

Both these sides will be strutting their stuff in a higher league this coming season with the hosts in the Spar Mid Wales League and the Amateurs in the Welsh Alliance and on this performance it is the Quarrymen that looked the more polished outfit as the scoreline suggests. But still this was just a friendly match with both teams having players missing from their squads. Over the 90 minutes both teams used all their available players and at the end it was Blaenau's manager Brian Vaughan who was the most contented as he decribed his team efforts as a very good squad performance. Among those who made a big impression on his first outing for the first team was the Amateurs Carwyn Jones and he crowned an impressive display by slotting home a penalty kick which then gave the visitors a 5-1 lead. Before then the Amateurs playing against a stiff breeze were two up at the interval thanks to goals from Karl Kavanagh on 18 and Gareth Evans on 44 minutes and they also missed a few more golden opportunities whilst at the other end the Amateurs goal was rarely under any threat though David Evans had a snap shot which was just too high. Ryan Thomas tried his best for the home side who were 3-0 down two minutes into the second period when John O'Donovan latched onto a fine through pass from Ceri Roberts and placing the ball wide of the advancing Arfon Williams in the home goal. The home side got their consolation goal soon after as David Evans scored on 51 minutes and Arfon Wiliams made two fine saves to thwart John O'Donovan and Terry Hughes from adding to the Blaenau's score before the home side were awarded a penalty but Blaenau's Gavin Lewis saved David Edwards spot kick and with that the home side chance of salvaging something from the match disappeared as the Amateurs scored 5 more goals in the last 16 minutes through a Keiron Ellis hattrick - and he also missed a penalty -, John O'Donovan and that Carwyn Jones pen. The home side will be hoping for a better performance as they take on Gwynedd League opponents Llanstumdwy whilst the Amateurs proposed two friendlies this week at Corwen on Tuesday and at Llandudno on Saturday have been called off though they are hopeful that another team can be found for a much needed friendly before the season proper opens on August 15th with a Welsh Cup tie home to Glan Conwy.

BETHESDA ATHLETIC 7 BLAENAU AMATEURS 5.

Not the result the Amateurs management wanted to see in the last of the club's pre season matches but it looked so much different early on as the Amateurs raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Carwyn Jones. Geraint Owen and John O'Donovan inside the first 25 minutes. Then the home side struck twice before the break with goals from Gwyn Thomas and Mathew Jones. Ceri Roberts converted a 48th minute penalty for 4-2 for the visitors and everything looked rosy but when they reshuffled their defence the home side took full advantage of the chances that appeared and led by the experienced Gareth Davies they pulled a goal back on the hour through Davies before Ceri Roberts briefly restored the Amateurs's two goal goal lead. Gareth Davies went on to complete his hattrick and Mathew Jones and Liam Willinger completed the scoring for the home side in what was not the result the Amateurs were looking for before they take on Glan Conwy in the Welsh Cup at Cae Clyd this Saturday
