Holywell V Blaenau 31.10.09

Match Reports 09/10 > October 09

HOLYWELL TOWN 5 BLAENAU AMATEURS 0.

After their run of good results lately this was a harsh lesson for the Amateurs in how to make the most of the chances that come your way as Holywell as a result of this win, took over at the top of the design2print Welsh Alliance League on goal difference from Rhydymwyn. The defeat saw the Amateurs drop down one place to 5th a creditable position for the club at the moment in this their first season in the higher league. Even the home side's management conceeded that the scorleine ,on the balance of play was a flattering one but the Clwyd side had to be complimented on the way they took full advantage of any mistakes made by the Amateurs and punished them for it and on least three occassions by scoring goals. As for the Quarrymen they played some attractive football up to the home side's penalty area where it all went wrong with that telling last pass or shot not forthcoming. Neil Reynolds was missing in defence and the side missed his aerial ability and on 7 minutes the home side went ahead when Paul Williams headed the ball past Geraint Hughes the Amateurs keeper. Worse was to come on 23 minutes when Wayne Edwards made it 2-0 for the home side. Shortly after the Amateurs's Geraint Owen was forced to leave the field with a leg injury to be replaced by Bryn Humphreys who coped well in the midfield position. John O'Donovan and Gareth Roberts strove hard to try and get the visitors back into the match but on 35 minutes a mistake by the visiting defence saw Wayne Edwards taking full advantage to make it 3-0. After the break Blaenau had enough of the ball and passed the ball about well but as before they failed to take advantage of any half chance that came their way. Adam Price made it 4-0 on 75 miuntes and Sion Pritchard completed the nap hand in the dying minutes to leave the Amateurs manager Mel Roberts to rellect on what might have happened if his team had not given away such soft goals and taken their chances, but that is football. Nevertheless he was proud of his team's performance and maybe learn from the defeat against a team which certainly will be among the title contenders on this form. As he said the team will have now to concentrate on this Saturday's away match at Halkyn United whom they beat 3-1 at Cae Clyd the previous week. Hopefully Neil Reynolds and Geraint Owen will be in the squad for that match as the Amateurs have a good chance on their last match clash to complete a quick double over the Clwyd area side.
