Man Of the Match = Neil Reynolds

The Amateurs stlii lead the Teejac Gwynedd League after this home win over last season's Caernarfon and District League champions Rhiwlas on Saturday. The home side were forced to make four changes with Terry Hughes and Geraint Owen suspended, Aled Owen injured and Gareth Roberts unavailable which meant manager Brian Vaughan had to bring in some of the reservers into his squad with one of them,Jones getting on the scoresheet with the 3rd goal with virtually the last kick of the match. Before then the away side had opened the more strongly even they too had a couple of their first team players unavailable. In Paul Ainsworth the visitors had a seasoned campaigner who with Jason Hughes up front they harrassed the home defence but they rarelyGeraint Hughes in the home goal thanks to some fine defending by the home defence with Neil Reynolds and Euron Roberts leading by example. Paul Ainsworth did get away once but saw his shot crash against the bar and when he slipped the home defence soon after Neil Reynolds made a fine recovery and his last ditch tackle saved a certain goal. Up front Ceri Roberts ploughed a lone furrow running tireless to try and create an opening for himself and his team mates. He was rewarded on 27 minutes when his pace got him clear of the visitors defence and he coolly slipped the ball past the advancing Rhiwlas keeper Chris Pritchard for the opener. One could argue that was against the run of play but from then on the home side seemed to get more and more into the game and had some half chances to increase their tally before the break. There were chances at the other end mostly coming from high balls pumped into the Blaenau penalty area but the final effort rarely tested the home keeper.
The first chance of the second half fell to Ainsworth but he blasted over from some 12 yards out. He and his side were to rue that miss when on 54 minutes the home side doubled their lead when Gary Hughes flicked on a free kick towards goal. The ball struck the underside of the bar and came back into play but the referee deemed that the ball had crossed over the line from the bar and he awarded the goal, a decisionthe visitors didn't appeal against. Rhiwlas tried hard to get back into the match but no avail and the home side were quilty of some misses before substitute Gethin Jones rounded up the proceedings with the third goal and well taken one it was too latching onto a defence splitting pass and his final shot gave Pritchard no chance of saving. So another satisfactory result for the Quarrymen though they have and probably will play better than this but one shouldn't be too critical for the side kept another clean sheet and more importantly gained the three points on offer. So it is to Beaumaris this Saturday with Aled Owen and Gareth Roberts both expected to be available whilst the suspended duo have to sit this one out as well.
