Blaenau Amatuers 3 Halkyn United 1
24.10.09
Blaenau continued with their winning ways on Saturday. Although the performance was more workman like than we are used to.
Blaenau took the lead in the 12th minute after John O'Donovon's neat pass found Gareth Roberts who duly drilled the ball into the net. Shortly after going 1 down things got worse for Halkyn as they were reduced to 10 men through injury, unfortunately they only brought 11 players with them. Blaenau had several good chances to extend their lead but it wasn't until the 36th minute when they did just that. A good ball from Ceri Roberts found John O'Donovon lurking at the back post, O'Donovon smartly put the ball past the Halkyn keeper.
In the second half Blaenau continued to work hard with Terry Hughes creating chances from his hard work down the left wing, but it was Halkyn that got the first goal of the half when Chris Williams capitalised on a defensive error and his shot from the edge of the box beat Geraint Hughes on 68 minutes. Halkyn then dug deep and came close to an equaliser 5 minutes later but Williams' shot went just over the bar.
Ian Roberts made some changes and brought on 3 young players during the last 20 mins, including 16 year old David Copsey for his debut. Blaenau worked hard to get that important third goal. The third goal came in the 78th minute when John O'Donovon finished an attacking move with a crisp strike to finish the match as a contest.
On the whole Blaenau played well in parts, but we know that they can play better and the match should have been over in the first half. This win puts Blaenau up to a credible fith position in the Welsh Alliance.
