Man Of the Match = Neil Reynolds

The Amateurs fine start to their Teejac Gwynedd League campaign continued with this win over last season's Anglesey League champions, Gwalchmaiwere making their first visit to Cae Clyd. They brought with them a large gathering of supporters and they gave their side vocal support throughout but in the end they had to go back to Anglesey with nothing to show for their or their side's efforts. It wasn't the best ever match seen at Cae Clyd with some scrappy play at times by both sides but the result was the thing that pleased the home fans. The home defence again looked in control after a shaky start when Neil Reynolds and Aled Owen for the only time in the match got away with some sloppy passes but after those early lapses they dominated the visitors strikers so much so that they hardly tested Geraint Hughes in the home goal. At the other end the visitors keeper Kenny Hughes coped well with everything that came his way and he dominated his area cutting out dangerous crosses with ease. He and his team had a let off when a Terry Hughes low cross was only inches away from being converted into the net by Gareth Roberts and the keeper's save from a Terry Hughes free kick was made to look easy. Blaenau had the most of the possession and the deadlock was broken on 34 minutes. It was Garteth Roberts who took advantage of some loose defending by the visitors who failed to clear the ball in their penalty area and Roberts was able to pass the ball into the net giving Kenny Hughes no chance of saving. That's how it stayed at the interval withthe home side 1-0 ahead. The Blaenau midfield which has started the season so brightly stuttered through this encounter and it was the attacking play of defender Euron Roberts that was to create the best chances for the home side aftrr the break. Indeed he was to go on a solo run at the end of which his left foot shot crashed back off the woodwork and was cleared by the visitors defence. Hughes made some fine stops none more so than on 66 minutes when the home side were awarded a penalty. It came when Gareth Roberts was pulled down when bearing in on goal and up stepped Cai Williams - who had come on in the second half as substitute for Ceri Roberts, - to take the kick but Hughes guessed right and saved the shot. In trying to get to the rebound Cai Williams was injured and took no further part in the match So for the second match in a row the Amateurs had tothe restwith 10 men as they had no further subs to put on. Still they stood firm and on 80 minutes they wrapped up the points and it came from a rare mistake by Kenny Hughes. Euron Roberts on another of his right wing forays crossed the ball high across the goal. This time the keeper failed to deal with it properly the ball going through his hands onto the head of defender Andy Sinclair whose clearing header ended up in his own net. That really demoralised the visitors and the Quarrymen had little difficulty in seeing out the match and by doing so are among the early pacesetters at the top of the league. On Saturday they are away at Bontnewydd.
