NWCFA Intermediate Cup Semi-Finals
Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs 0 v 2 Greenfield @ Conwy United F C
BLAENAU AMATEURS 0 GREENFIELD 2.
The Amateurs hopes of reaching their first final of the season were dashed when
beaten by the Clwyd side in the North Wales Intermediate Cup semi final stage in
the match played on Conwy United ground. Having already beaten two top teams
from the Clwyd League Prestatyn Res and Penmaenmawr on their own grounds to
reach this stage in the competition the Quarrymen must have thought they could
have a chance to win this tie as well but it wasn't to be. To be truthful
they never had the chance to impose themselves on this match as Greenfield were
quicker to the ball from the start were more direct whilst the Amateurs midfield
which usually is so reliable never got to grips with their opponents who harried
and hassled to such an extent that Ceri Roberts up front for the Amateurs hardly
had a decent pass in the whole match. Grennfield took the lead on 16 minutes
with a move down their right and when Mark Pritchard crossed the ball into the
area Shaun Pritchard
planted his header well wide of Peter Jones in the Blaenau goal. Blaenau's
John O'Donovan looked out of sorts from the star and he limped off soon
after to be replaced by Karl Kavanagh and the only save Lee Evans in the
Greenfield goal had to make in the first half was when he tipped a Gareth
Roberts effort over his bar. Peter Jones too had little to do but still
Greenfield took the most likely to score as the game wore though the Amateurs
had a brief spell in which they promised much but never threatened the goal.
Peter Jones was called upon to tip Monty Bennet free kick away for a corner kick
and as the match wore on it became more stretched. Pritchard had a golden chance
to put his side further ahead when clean through on goal he lobbed the ball over
the advancing Peter Jones and also over the bar. Within a minute he made ammends
by scoring his and his side's second goal on 75 minutes with a well taken
goal. That killed off any hopes the Amatuers had
of salvaging anything from the tie and their players disappointment was
evident on their faces as they trooped off ant the end of the match which was
only the second time this season that they hadn't scored in a match. There
are more cup semi finals to play over Llanstumdwy on Saturday and Bethel on
Easter Monday both at Cae Clyd but they had a midweek league encounter at
Porthmadog before then.
