Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs 3 v 2 Gaerwen
Terry Hughes 21
John O’Donovan 29/30
BLAENAU AMATEURS 3 GAERWEN 2.
Having clinched the Teejac Gwynedd League title with their 3-1 midweek win over Real Llandudno the Amateurs management team must have wished they had rested some of their key players for this match against Gaerwen which had little or no importance for either side as two of their players suffered injuries which adds to the growing list of players who are sidelined and with two cup finals and three league matches still to be played it is a worrying time at Cae Clyd, injury wise. The latest players to leave the field injured on Saturday were Ceri Roberts in the very first few minutes to be followed by his substitute Gareth Roberts who was carried off after 36 minutes. Ironic it was against Gaerwen in an Eryri Shield tie that home keeper Geraint Hughes suffered a fractured leg which means that he will not feature again this season and fair play to the visitors there was nothing malicious in the tackles that caused these latest two injuries. It looks likely however that they should be fit for the first cup final against Llangefni Res at Porthmafod on May 13th and the other final against Bodedern will be the final match of the long season to be played on Bethesda's ground on May 23rd. On Saturday the home side dominated from the start but it took them 21 minutes to open the scoring when Terry Hughes slotted the ball past keeper Robyns. Two quick goals around the half hour mark by John O'Donovan after some fine approach work gave the home side a lead they fully deserved. Then came Gareth Roberts's injury and the home side seemed to lack that penetration but still created many chances some of which were squandered whilst Robyns in the Gaerwen goal saved well to keep his side from going further behind. There seemed to be little danger to the home goal on 79 minutes but Sam Aspinall nipped in to score a simple goal whist at the other end more chances were squandered and the home side were guilty over elaborating instead of trying for goal. Robyns made the save of the match to keep out a John O'Donovan header and so deny him his hatrick. Geraint Owen was controlling the midfield for the home side but it took a last ditch tackle from Neil Reynolds as Aspinall looked to be clear on goal. The visitors did get their second goal with virtually the last kick of the match with a stunning drive from Kieron Ellis in injury time to give a scoreline which wasn't a true reflection of what had gone on before. Bethel are the visitors to Cae Clyd on Saturday and before then the Amateurs will have played Holyhead Hotspurs in midweek and the hope is that there won't be more injuries to add to the already long a list of players who are not available for selection.
