League match
Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs 0 v 3 Bontnewydd
BLAENAU AMATEURS 0 BONTNEWYDD 3.
For only the second time this season the Amateurs failed to score in a Teejac Gwynedd League match the other time was when they were beaten at home by the same score by UCNW Bangor. They had no complaints this time as the visitors thoroughly deserved their win against a low par Amateurs. Maybe it was this Saturday's Eryri Shield final that was more important for the home side as the League championship had been secured a few games ago. Also more changes to the side didn't help matters though young Geraint Williams making his first appearance in goal for the first team was not to blame for any of the goals. The afternoon had started all smiles as the club were presented with the Teejac Championship trophy by the League's Vice Chairman Alun Griffiths who was accompanied by the league secretary John Roberts. In all 18 players were presented with their medals and it is understood that the club is to purchase a further 6 medals to those other players who have turned out for the Amateurs during the season. From the start Bontnweydd were the more determined side and they went ahead on 16 minutes when a free kick was neatly diverted past Geraint Williams by Sion Rhys Jones. Worse was to follow 4 minutes later when Neil Reynolds was adjudged to have brought down Aled Rice in the area and the experienced Ian Pleming converted the spot kick. Geraint Williams kept his side from going further behind when he dived low by his post to push a Sion Rhys Jones shot out for a corner kick. At the other end Jason Hughes had little to do though to be fair an early injury to Terry Hughes didn't help the Amateurs cause.
Early in the second half the home defence which has looked so confident all season was found wanting as Jamie Andow were clear on goal but his weak effort was dealt by Geraint Williams. Half way through the half the scoring was completed with another free kick this time by Steven Jones whose 25 yard shot went through a crowd of players in the area to nestle in the far corner of the net. Jason Hughes then did well to save from Geraint Owen as the home side tried to salvage something from the mtach but it wasn't their day and their Gwynedd League campaign ended in defeat their 5th at home whilst they were unbeaten in their 14 away matches winning 12 of them. It has been a long hard season and with the mounting injury problems they had over the past few months the club is to be congratualtaed on their success. The club is to hold its presentation evening at the Oakeley Arms on Saturday June 6th where it is expected senior figures from the North Wales soccer scene will be making the presentations.
