Blaenau Ffestiniog Amateurs 0 v 3 Bangor University

The Amateurs after yet another away win now 9 points clear at the top of the Teejac Gwynedd League though some of the chasing pack have games in hand. Still points in the bag is what's needed and the Amateurs had to withstand some spoiling tactics by the students to clinch this win. When one is leading any league the other teams seem to raise their game to try and beat the team which is yet to taste defeat. Some of the Amateurs football in the opening 20 minutes was impressive with some neat build up play the midfield but it was in the last third they broke down with either that one pass to many or being stifled out by a packed defence.Maybe and earlier shot on goal would have been a better option at times. For the students defender Peter Reynolds played well throughout and he and his fellow defenders had a lot to do in the first half which saw very few clear cut chances.Gareth Roberts created a chance on the right and then sent a low cross across the penalty area but the inrushingMitchelmore failed by inchesconnecttheat the far post with the home keeper Simon Docking beaten. During that first half hour or so Blaenau saw three of their players needing lengthy treatment as first John O'Donovan, then Dafydd Reynolds and Ceri Roberts went off the field. This upset the rhythm of the side but still they looked the more likely to score and they were rewarded on the stroke of half time when Geraint Owen unmarked headed in a Gareth Roberts corner kick to give the visitors a deserved interval lead. The students opened the second half with more purpose but they hardly tested Geriant Hughes in the Amateurs goal such was the sound defensive play of the visitors whereOwen and Neil Reynolds were again impressivewere the rest of the defence. On the hour the visitors doubled their lead when goal scorer Geraint Owen turned provider as he sent a through ball for John O'Donoavn to pounce onto and drill it into the far corner of the net giving Docking no chance of saving.Blaenau were forced into making changes in the second half with Gareth Roberts, skipper Gary Hughes and Ceri Roberts going off to be replaced by Steff Pritchard. Terry Hughes and Karl and still the visitors were in command and Terry Hughes went close to increasing the lead with a shot that was just wide of the target. To their credt the students battled hard to the end and nearly got back into the match with 10 minutres left on the clock when for once David Bulloughthe visitors defence rounded Geraint Hughes but John O'Donovan got back to clear the ball off the line. So it stayed at 2-0 and in a post match statement the Amateurs manager Brian Vaughan felt that the best is yet to come from his side which is an ominous sign for the rest of the league. We should know more about the club's championshipby the end of next month. In that time they have played tricky away matches at Garwen and Gwalchmai as well as important cup ties the first of which is next Saturday when they travel to meet Prestatyn Res who like the Amateurs are unbeaten
