BETHEL 1 BLAENAU AMATEURS 5.
Its nice to be back after 5 weeks without a game and it was nicer still as the Amateurs consolidated their lead at the top of the Teejac Gwynedd League with this thumping win and so keep their unbeaten away tag in place having won 11 and drawn 2 on the road this term. This match was probably won before a single pass was made for it was the visitors who won the toss and chose to play with a gale force wind at their backs and by the interval they had made the match safe as they led by 5-0. They went ahead on 9 minutes when some fine work on the right by Ceri Roberts who squared the ball to the far post where Gareth Roberts slotted the ball home. It was all Blaenau at that stage with John O'Donovan bring out a good save from home keeper Iolo Roberts and the presure soon turned to goals as Keiron Ellis's corner kick was diverted into his own net by Gary Jones for 2-0 on 21 minutes. Ceri Roberts was too fast for the home defence as he made it 3-0 on 25 minutes and captain Gary Hughes made it 4-0 two minutes later. There was even time for O'Donovan to hit the crossbar with a delighful chip with Roberts beaten before Geraint Owen scored the best goal of the match with a rasping drive which entered the net off the underside of the bar minutes before the break. The home fans were hoping that referee Anderson from Talysarn would call off the match at this stage but to his credit he ignored the home fans pleas and allowed the match to continue. There was glimmer of hope for the home side when their chief scorer Jamie Whitmore scored 5 minutes into the second but that was as good as they got for the Amateurs defence stood firm whilst at the other end they could and should added to their scoreline with Keiron Ellis and Ceri Roberts both failing to hit the target when in good positions. For the last 15 minutes or so conditions were really bad as driving rain and the gales made it most unpleasant for all cancerned but the official played the full 90 minutes. Both teams are congratulated for their efforts in such trying conditions but on the day it was the Quarrymen who were far too superior all round and showed no ring rustiness from their long enforced inactivity. It is on the road again this Saturday with a cup tie at Gaerwen and they will be home the following week to Bodedern in the league.
