AMLWCH 0 BLAENAU AMATEURS 5.
26.09.09

The Amateurs are through to the second round of the Normac Precisions Cookson Cup after this win at Amlwch on Saturday. This tie should have been sealed much sooner than the last 15 minutes when the visitors scored three times as they were the more dangerous side throughout and with a little bit of luck and better finishing they could have easily been three or four up at the break. As it was the Quarrymen led by just the one goal scored by John O'Donovan at the interval as he beat the offside trap to slot the ball past Luke Williams in the home goal on 19 minutes. The keeper made a fine save to deny Ceri Roberts from doubling the score and Geraint Owen was inches away from scoring. At the other end the home side hardly troubled Geraint Hughes back in goal after his several months absence following his fractured leg way back in March. Missing from the Amateurs line up for different reasons were Neil Reynolds, Terry Hughes and Keiron Ellis but the make shift defence coped well throughout with Steve Jones and Gareth Evans hardly putting a foot wrong throughout ably supported by the rest of the defence. The home side had more of the play in the first 20 minutes or so of the second half without creating any clear cut chances as they were guilty of making that one pass too many and the Amateurs defence were able to block or clear the danger. Blaenau were always dangerous on the break and Gareth Roberts sent through with a defence splitting pass from Geraint Owen forced Luke Williams into a fine save. On 70 minutes the visitors doubled their score as Gareth Roberts scored and from then on it was the vistors who were well in control with Gareth Roberts leading the charge with his pace which left the home defence in his wake. He first set up John O'Donovan for number 3 on 77 minutes followed minutes later by a similar tap in for Ceri Roberts and the rout was completed with virtually the last kick of the match when Ceri Roberts put clear by John O'Donovan completed the scoring. Amlwch had some experienced players in their ranks but their discipline was lacking as nearly half of their side was shown a yellow card with the Amateurs players showing much restraint under some hefty challenges to end the match with none. So it is back to Amlwch again this Saturday in a Welsh Alliance League encounter and the Quarrymen will be hoping for a similar result but the home side can only get better and have vowed to gain revenge this time around. We'll see.
